Trista Sutter on What Life Is Like 5 Months After Her Traumatizing Seizure

The former Bachelorette gave GoodHousekeeping.com a health update following the scary incident

rista Sutter was left with so many questions after suffering a life-threatening seizure in June. But in an interview with GoodHousekeeping.com, she said she looked into the issue and still doesn't have an answer, even five months later. The original

Bachelorette explains that a visit to the neurologist did not give her too much insight into the root of the problem. "They basically gave me a clean bill of health, and they're hopeful that it will never happen again," Sutter says. "They hope that it's a fluke."

She says doctors did not find a tumor or actual diagnosis for why the condition happened in the first place, but they reassured her that it's a common occurrence. "It happens a lot to people," Sutter says doctors told her. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, one in 26 people in the United States will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime, and anywhere from four to 10 out of 1,000 people in the world will live with an active seizure at some point in their lives.

This was me yesterday. ...two hours after I had a seizure. ...two hours after I fell on my daughter's chest & she watched, along with her brother & grandparents, in confusion & horror as her mommy stared blankly off into the distance & started turning blue. ...two hours after we were supposed to have an adventure. An adventure to one of the most beautiful National Parks in Europe. Instead, I ended up in a euphoric white dream that the voices of my husband and daughter pulled me from and I ended up in a Croatian hospital being poked and prodded and wondering "why me?" But today, I had to ask, "why not me"? I'm human. I have an expiration date. I've always envisioned that date being sometime after my kids have graduated college, met the loves of their lives and created families of their own, but I was reminded yesterday that it could come anytime, in any country, whether I'm surrounded by strangers or people I love, or neither, or both. I've never been perfect and I never will be, but from here on out, I vow to try my best to live this life to the fullest. To embrace gratitude and the lessons I wrote about over 3 years ago with a newly acquired perspective. To stress less. To love more. To listen. Be kind. Spread joy. To be a better version of myself as a wife, mother, sister, cousin, niece, aunt, neighbor, daughter, and friend. Thank you to those back in the states, whom I hold dear. You know who you are. Thank you to those I've never met who lift me up and have my back. Thank you to those from my #bachelornation family who've shown this OG kindness & respect when I know I'm old news. Thank you to the kind tourists & Croatians who held my hand, wiped my tears, and hugged my kids. You will forever be remembered. And lastly, thank you to my family, especially @ryansutter. Without you, I don't know that I would be here today. You are my everything and I love you forevermore. If you've gotten this far, know that I don't share these words for your pity, but to inspire you to take them and be thankful for your life and blessings. Tell the people you love how you feel and live with grateful enthusiasm. I plan to.

Five months ago, I didn’t know if I’d be given the gift of another birthday. (cue the eye rolls & sighs) Dramatic? Maybe a little, but it’s my truth and it’s my birthday so judge if you must but know I must ignore. 😜 Anyway, on June 1, I was reminded that my expiration date is an actuality and that how I spent the rest of my days and whom I spent them with was my choice. Getting caught in the daily stress of life is easy to do for this mom of two, but since that day in Croatia, I try my best to be present and appreciate all that this crazy life has to offer. Thanks to a mini break from school, I woke up in Zion National Park with three of my favorite humans. My wish of joy, adventure, family, and love came true today and if today is any indication, it’s going to be an epic year. Thank you to those who fill my bucket. You know who you are and I love you for being you and helping me find the joy I crave (especially you, Mr @ryansutter!) Now, do me a birthday favor...get out there and enjoy the beauty of this world. It’s pretty freaking amazing. #happybirthdaytome #blessed #grateful #lifeinperspective #thiswillbeanalltimefavepic #fatherdaughter #youcanseethejoy #photographylover #zionnationalpark #suttercampingadventure

Sutter revealed earlier this year that her daughter was "traumatized" when she fell on top of her in the middle of a shuttle bus, and admits now that she felt a bit mortified herself that it happened in such a public place.

"It was embarrassing because I lost control of my body, but not embarrassing at the same time because it was something that I couldn't control," she says.

Sutter said many members of The Bachelor family reached out to her when they heard what happened, including former "Bachelorettes" Kaitlyn Bristowe, Andi Dorfman, DeAnna Pappas, and host Chris Harrison

But after the incident she says she felt especially bonded to another member of her real-life family– her cousin who suffers from epilepsy. "She was one of the first people that I was writing from Croatia, asking her experience with it," she says. "Connecting in a way that other people don't necessarily share was special."

Sutter says she has taken big steps to minimize the amount of stress he has in her life, including partnering with Honeywell Air Purifiers to help her with her severe allergies, getting more sleep and saying "no" a lot more – including to reality television.

"I have no plans to return to reality TV," she says. "We've been asked over the years, and I think our motto is never say never, but I'm trying to limit the amount of things that I'm doing and putting on my schedule. I'm just focusing on my kids and trying to be as authentic and true to myself as possible."
